Sudan: What Happens After the SAF Regains Khartoum State?

The war in Sudan saw a significant military shift in March 2025 as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) made major advances in Khartoum State. SAF regained full control over the cities of Bahri and Khartoum, including all neighborhoods, reaching as far as the Awliya Mountain locality and large portions of Greater Omdurman.
This development marks the most pivotal moment in the conflict, which began on April 15, 2023. Since then, RSF had maintained near-complete control over the capital for almost two years. However, SAF's earlier success in retaking the Jebel Moya area in Sennar State in late 2024 signaled a shift in momentum.
Given the strategic importance of Khartoum as the nation’s capital, the SAF's recapture of both Khartoum and Gezira States has raised significant questions. The advances were marked by large-scale RSF withdrawals and minimal direct combat, despite the importance and size of the reclaimed areas. Analysts have proposed differing interpretations: some argue that RSF avoids battles it anticipates losing, opting instead to retreat, while others suggest the withdrawals signal a military defeat, compounded by SAF's drone strikes which reportedly killed hundreds of RSF troops, prompting their retreat to preserve remaining forces.
Below is the March 2025 report compiled by the Youth Citizens Observers Network (YCON) relying on primary and secondary data gathered by its local observers distributed across all states of Sudan, it reflects on social, economic and political implication of war, in addition to asylum and displacement movements, and the condition of the displaced and refugees in camps, from February 27 to March 26, 2025, in addition to our recommendations (we youth) to help resolve the Sudanese crisis.
