May 2025 witnessed a series of significant political developments in Sudan. On Thursday, May 22, the United States imposed sanctions on the Sudanese government, accusing it of deploying internationally banned chemical weapons against civilians. In response, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly rejected the U.S. State Department’s claims, describing them as baseless.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Security and Defense Council, in a statement delivered by Lieutenant General Yassin Ibrahim—Minister of Defense and spokesperson for the Council—announced that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is now considered an enemy state. Consequently, Sudan has severed diplomatic relations and withdrawn its embassy and consulate from the UAE. This decision followed a series of drone attacks that targeted vital infrastructure in Port Sudan. Below is the May 2025 report compiled by the Youth Citizens Observers Network (YCON) relying on primary and secondary data gathered by its local observers distributed across all states of Sudan, it reflects on social, economic and political implication of war, in addition to asylum and displacement movements, and the condition of the displaced and refugees in camps, from April 27 to May 26, 2025, in addition to our recommendations (we youth) to help resolve the Sudanese crisis.
