Gezira State In the April 15 War:What Happened?

Following the outbreak of war on April 15, 2023, in Khartoum State—and amid escalating battles and the RSF’s control over large parts of the capital—Gezira State initially remained relatively stable. This stability turned Wad Madani into a hub for economic and commercial activity, as well as a major destination for displaced persons. Over half a million people sought refuge in the city, intensifying the humanitarian crisis and placing additional pressure on essential services. Wad Madani became a central base for numerous international and local organizations that had evacuated personnel from Khartoum. It emerged as Sudan’s key commercial center, supplying basic goods, medical supplies, and market essentials to western states. During this period, multiple violations were recorded, including arbitrary arrests and extrajudicial killings of civilians accused of affiliating with the RSF. The environment was marked by heightened political polarization and an ongoing security alert.
