Breaking The blackboard: The Toll of War on Education in Darfur and Kordofan

Since the outbreak of the Sudan war on April 15, 2023, its devastating effects on the education system have increased, with a large number of schools been closed or converted into centers to shelter displaced people. A large number of students in the states of Kordofan and Darfur were unable to sit for the postponed Sudanese Certificate exams for the 2022–2023 academic year.

Thus, the Sudanese Certificate transformed from a prominent national and social event with profound impact on families and society into a purely political issue, while the battlefields became a true test of the patience of students and their families over the loss of their future and dreams.

Educational activities have been suspended in most cities across Darfur and Kordofan states. This widespread suspension has created a major dilemma for the continuity of education in the region, despite some limited attempts, such as the announcement by the civil administration in South Darfur, affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces, of the results of the intermediate education stage in July 2025.

Universities in Darfur lost their records entirely. University students in the states of Darfur and Kordofan represented one of the most affected groups by the war, as the conflict directly impacted their academic progress and living conditions. They found themselves facing intertwined challenges that including the destruction of classrooms, disruption of essential services, and collapse of educational infrastructure, along with the psychological and social pressures associated with displacement and loss of stability.

This report clearly reveals the unprecedented collapse that has struck the education sector in Darfur and Kordofan states. The impact of the war has gone beyond the temporary disruption of education, resulting in a structural crisis that threatens current and future generations and undermines any prospects for long-term societal development.
