When Refuge Becomes Precarious: Violence in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement – Uganda

In the first half of July 2025, the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda—home to refugees from several countries, particularly Sudan and South Sudan—witnessed a wave of violent clashes. The incident involved an assault by a group of South Sudanese refugees (identified as the aggressors) against Sudanese refugees (the victims). Residential units allocated to Sudanese families were attacked, resulting in multiple injuries and the death of one refugee.


The report draws on in-depth, individual interviews with eight eyewitnesses (seven Sudanese and one South Sudanese refugee), supplemented by field data from local sources. Due to limited access, only one testimony was obtained from the South Sudanese community, highlighting the challenges of data collection in sensitive conflict environments.
